Teaching Statement

In my approach to dance and teaching, I strongly emphasize the importance of healthy technique and challenging oneself all while working to create an environment that is supportive and welcoming. These philosophies of mine are to help dancers build a strong foundation through prioritizing safe dance practices and pushing themselves in a space where they feel they can thrive.

I believe dancers should have basic knowledge and understanding of human anatomy. Having this knowledge can help dancers better understand how to have healthy technique and how to prevent future injuries. I incorporate anatomical terms and visual diagrams of what body parts I am describing. I also like to use imagery to make connections to the movement we are exploring. My goal with this practice is to inspire students to learn more about the human body and how it operates in a dance setting.

Another important belief of mine is encouraging my students to push past their boundaries. I like to challenge them by implementing lots of patterns and quick movements that allow their minds to work in an energizing way. I want them to expand their horizons and find new things to learn about themselves somatically. I also like guiding my students into trying new things and making sure they feel safe to do so. The way I have them practice this is by teaching them new skills that’s a little more advanced than what they usually learn. This approach helps students improve their skills and highlights the importance of taking risks.

In my classes, I try to highlight having a respectful and friendly environment. I want my students to feel supported not only by me, but by their peers as well. I often remind them that my class is a judgement free zone and everyone is there to learn. Through the use of partner work and peer critiques, this helps establish a space where everyone feels uplifted and valued. I also give concise and constructive feedback in a way that is not harmful to the dancers. Practicing these techniques helps create an environment that is comfortable for everyone and welcoming to all.

I take the responsibility and privilege of having such an important role in my students’ lives very seriously, and my priority is that they will leave my class feeling like a new and better person than they were before. In my class, they will feel welcome and supported just as they are. I strive for them to grow as individuals while building confidence in themselves as they learn the beauty that is dance, all while having fun doing so.
